What is a Lab Grown Diamond?
The first Lab Grown Diamond was made in 1954 using the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) method through GE, by scientists Howard Tracy Hall and Herbert Strong.
The HPHT method is the process of taking underdeveloped natural diamonds, that were prematurely released through volcanic eruption, and applying extremely high temperatures and pressures to finish the crystalization process, leaving a large rough diamond ready to be cut.
This method was further developed into 1971, where we were able to perfect the process and create the first gem-quality lab grown diamond.
In the 1980's, the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method was created.
The CVD method involves filling a vaccuum chamber with carbon-containing gas that crystalizes on a synthetic diamond seed. This method uses lower temperatures and pressures than HPHT.
Both methods are used today.
